“Squacquerone di Romagna” (Squaquaron) is a cheese of ancient origins, with close ties to the countryside where it used to be made and eaten during the winter since the cold weather meant that it could be kept for a few days.
It is a very, very soft cheese, round and almost squashed in shape, without a rind; it has a pleasantly acid, milky flavour. The raw material used is whole milk. Squacquerone cheese is not ripened and it is made all year round. It is delicious spread on a hot “piadina”.
It was awarded D.O.P. (P.O.D. - Protected Designation of Origin) status in 2012.
